404 Page

Design a 404 page for when someone lands on a URL that does not exist. The page should say what happened in plain language, then give users a fast way to recover. Keep the error message readable first; any illustration or playful copy should support that message, not replace it.

Build a layout with one clear primary action, such as returning home or going back to the main section of the site. Add a small set of secondary routes to the places users most likely need next: search, popular pages, support, or sitemap. If search is included, make it prominent enough to use immediately.

Use the brand’s visual system so the page still feels like part of the product, but keep the hierarchy simple. This is a dead end screen, so the design should reduce friction, not add it. The user should understand the problem and have a next step within a glance.

What to deliver

  • Design the 404 message, headline, and short explanation
  • Add one primary way back to the site
  • Include secondary links to key destinations
  • Provide search or browse options if they fit the layout
  • Use brand illustration or tone without hiding the error state

Incorporate a little creativity or humor where appropriate, as a unique 404 page can enhance user experience and show off the website's personality.
