Library Kiosk Interface

Design a public library kiosk interface for self-service browsing and checkout. The screen needs to work for a wide range of users: quick visitors, logged-in patrons, and people who just want to find a title and place a hold. Start with a home screen that makes the main paths obvious: search the catalog, browse categories, and sign in to an account.

The search experience should move from query to results to item detail without dead ends. Results need filters for format, availability, branch, and age group. Each item card should show the title, author, format, and whether it is available now, available for hold, or checked out. On the detail screen, make the next action clear: reserve, check out, or get directions to the shelf or branch.

Build the checkout and account flow for a kiosk environment. Assume users may be standing, in a hurry, or unfamiliar with the system. Include card scan, PIN entry, session timeout, and confirmation states. If a scan fails, a hold is unavailable, or the search returns nothing, the interface should explain what happened and point to the next best action without clearing the user's work.

What to deliver

  • Design the kiosk home screen with search, browse, and account entry points.
  • Design catalog results with filters, sort, and clear item availability.
  • Design a book detail view with hold, checkout, and location info.
  • Design the checkout flow for library card scan, PIN entry, and confirmation.
  • Design empty, error, and timeout states with clear recovery actions.

Incorporate elements of the library atmosphere into your design to make the experience more intuitive and enjoyable for users.
