Lock Screen Music Controls
Design the lock screen music controls for a phone that is still locked. The player sits on top of the usual lock screen content, with album art, track info, and transport controls visible without unlocking.
This is a system surface, so it has to feel native to the OS: restrained, legible, and quick to scan. The controls should work at a glance while the device remains secure.
Make the playback state obvious from the first frame. Users should know whether audio is playing, what’s playing, and which controls are available without hunting through the screen.
Treat the lock screen as a layered composition: time, notifications, and media controls need to coexist without competing. The music module should feel like it belongs there, not pasted on top.
What to deliver
- Design the default locked state with active music playback.
- Place album art, track title, and artist in a compact media card.
- Include play/pause, next, and previous controls sized for thumb use.
- Show how the media module sits alongside the clock and lock affordances.
- Define the paused state so the control changes are obvious at a glance.
Use album art as a strong visual anchor, but keep the control buttons large enough to hit while the phone is in one hand and partially obscured by glare or motion.
