Voice Chat Overlay

Design the in-game voice chat overlay that sits on top of active multiplayer play. It should show who is speaking right now without pulling attention away from the match.

The overlay needs to make chat channels legible at a glance: party, team, squad, or any other live channel the game supports. Players should understand where their voice is going before they talk.

Treat this as a quick status layer, not a settings screen. The UI should stay compact, readable over motion, and easy to scan during combat or traversal.

The interesting part is balancing speaker indication with channel context. A player should be able to tell who is talking, which channel is active, and whether they need to switch channels or mute someone, all with minimal visual noise.

What to deliver

  • Design the default overlay state during live play.
  • Show active speaker indicators for one and multiple speakers.
  • Display channel labels and the currently selected channel.
  • Include muted, blocked, and no-mic states if they affect the overlay.
  • Place the overlay where it stays readable without covering critical HUD elements.

Use a clear visual hierarchy: active speaker first, channel label second, everything else tucked into low-priority states.
