Canceling Subscription

Design the subscription cancellation flow from the account/billing area through final confirmation. Start with the current plan summary, renewal date, and what access will end if the user cancels now. The user should know exactly which subscription is being changed before they take any irreversible step.

The flow should ask for a cancellation reason, but keep it lightweight: quick-select options plus an optional text field. Use that step to surface relevant alternatives such as pausing billing, switching plans, or contacting support. These options should be visible before the final confirm screen, not buried after a decision is made.

The final confirmation should repeat the plan name, cancellation date, and whether access ends immediately or at the end of the billing period. After completion, show a clear success state with the updated subscription status and a path back to account settings. If the user can undo within a grace period, make that action obvious here.

What to deliver

  • Design the account settings entry point for canceling a subscription.
  • Map the cancellation flow with reasons, alternatives, and final confirmation.
  • Show the subscription impact before the user commits.
  • Include pause, downgrade, and keep-subscription options as equal-path exits.
  • Design the post-cancel confirmation state with end date and next steps.

Humanize the cancellation process by using empathetic language and assuring users that they can easily return. This leaves a positive lasting impression, potentially leading them to come back or recommend the service to others.
